Andrew Schnell joined NASA in 2008 and is the acting project manager for the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Schnell and his team monitor the observatory’s operations to ensure it meet obligations to the international community of astronomers and astrophysicists. The observatory is a telescope specially designed to detect X-ray emission from very hot regions of the universe such as exploded stars, clusters of galaxies, and matter around black holes. Marshall has served as home for the Chandra Program Office since its inception.
Previously, Schnell was a mission manager with the Technology Demonstration Mission Program Office at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), managing both the Deep Space Atomic Clock (DSAC) mission and the Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC) mission, both led by JPL.
Schnell also served as study lead for Marshall’s Advanced Concepts Office, leading several conceptual design studies including iterations of Mars Sample Return’s Mars Ascent Vehicle, the Europa Deorbit Stage, and the Lynx X-ray Observatory. Prior to his work in Advanced Concepts, he was a member of the Cryogenic Fluid Management team. He holds a patent for work completed as an undergraduate intern at MSFC.
