John Schmidt

A native of Lafayette, California, John Schmittearned a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from the University of California, Davis in 1999 and a Master of Science in Microbiology and Immunology from the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2009.  John retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 20+ years of service in a diverse career as an Army Aviator and Acquisition Corps officer. 

After two combat tours in Iraq as a Blackhawk helicopter pilot, maintenance test pilot and company commander, John served as an Assistant Professor and Course Director within the Department of Chemistry and Life Science at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York.  Next, John moved to Huntsville with his wife Sarah and children, Avery and Miles, where he served as an Acquisition Corps officer developing and delivering major weapon systems.  His assignments at Redstone Arsenal include the Fixed Wing and Apache Program Offices, the Joint Multi-Role Technical Demonstration office, the Combat Capabilities Development CommandAviation and Missile Center, and the Cargo Helicopter Project Office.

In 2020, John started his own consulting firm (Schmitt Consulting Group LLC), where he has committed his energy to projects of impact in biotech, advanced manufacturing, technology transfer, commercialization and marketing.  He serves as the Executive Director of the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation and Integration Center, a non-profit private-public partnership dedicated to accelerating the adoption of advanced manufacturing and supporting the workforce development needs of North Alabama.  Additionally, John serves on the board of Gene Capture, Little Orange Fish, a community-based mental health non-profit and is a founding member of the Inner Defense Initiative, a  research collaborative committed to serving victims of trauma through biopsychology.   

 Active in the local community, John serves on the board of Rocket City Civil Rights LLC, is a published songwriter, and founder of Listen Local Huntsville LLC.
